Privacy at Esport Me
This page explains what happens when you read Esport Me. It describes how the site actually works; it is not a certification of compliance with any particular law. Last updated 6 October 2026.
What we measure
We count readers with our own first-party measurement, not a third-party analytics or advertising service. When a page loads, the site’s own script sends one small request to this site recording:
- the page’s path and title (not any search terms or other query in its address);
- a random visitor identifier and a random visit identifier, made in your browser;
- on the first page of a visit, the website that sent you here and any campaign tags in the link you followed;
- whether the device has a touch screen, and whether the browser says it is automated;
- what kind of page it is (for example the homepage, a section, an article, the archive, search, or the “page not found” page), and whether it carried a commercial link;
- if you arrived by following a link from another page of this site, which part of that page the link was in (for example the related stories or the section menu) — not which link, and not anything you typed.
While the page stays open and visible, a short “still reading” signal is sent at most once a minute. A click on a commercial link is recorded the same way, together with which link it was. Loading more stories into a list, and running a search, are recorded as having happened — for a search, only roughly how many stories it found (none, a few, or many). What you type into search is never sent or stored.
From the request itself we derive your country (from the country our network provider, Cloudflare, attaches to each request), and your device type, browser and operating system (from the browser’s user-agent). No IP address is stored in our analytics records, and nothing is used to identify you as a person. Requests from automated browsers and known crawlers are filtered out.
What your browser stores
The site sets no cookies. It uses your browser’s local storage for:
nr_a: the random visitor and visit identifiers above, and when you were last active. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, these are kept only for the current tab and disappear when it closes.newsroom:theme: whether you chose light or dark mode, if you did.
For the moment between clicking a link on this site and the next page opening, the tab’s
own session storage holds nr_via: the address of the page you are going to and
which part of this page the link was in. The next page reads it once and deletes it; it is
gone when the tab closes in any case.
Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes all of these, and a new random identifier is made on your next visit.
How long we keep it
Individual page-view records are kept for 90 days. After that only daily totals remain (page views, visitors and visits per day, and breakdowns such as country, device and source), kept for about 25 months.
Our own browsing
People who work on Esport Me can mark their own browsers so that their reading is kept out of the figures. This uses a signed link we issue to ourselves and is stored in that browser only. It changes nothing for anyone else.
Other services
- Cloudflare delivers and protects this site. It necessarily handles the network address of every request in order to do so, under its own privacy policy.
- Our web server keeps an access log of requests, which includes the network address Cloudflare passes on, for running and securing the site. It is not published, sold or used for advertising.
- Links to source outlets, photographers and social networks take you to those sites only when you follow them. The share buttons are plain links: nothing is sent to a social network unless you use one.
We do not run advertising trackers and we do not sell data.
