Valve sneaks "Big Head" mode and new LAR rifle model into CS2 patch
An October 28th Counter-Strike 2 update billed as routine bug fixes hides a cosmetic Big Head mode and a renamed, re-modelled LAR rifle still marked for internal use only.

Valve released a Counter-Strike 2 update on 28th October that looked unremarkable on paper but contained far more than its published patch notes suggested, Dust2.us reported.
The official changes centred on quality-of-life fixes: a new option letting players toggle Silent Reload Mode instead of holding the button down, a fix for reload sounds playing even when silent reloading was requested, a correction for liquid rendering as black on AMD graphics cards, and repairs to sound and UI glitches during demo playback.
None of those listed fixes explains the update's standout addition. Valve have quietly introduced a "Big Head" mode on the Casual Defusal Group Alpha maps, in the spirit of arcade classics like NBA Jam and GoldenEye 007. Players' heads shrink or grow depending on their kill-death ratio during a match, with a negative K/D shrinking the head and a positive one inflating it.
The feature is absent from the written patch notes entirely, suggesting Valve built it in as a hidden extra rather than a formally announced feature. Valve have also teased further "mutators" that will alter gameplay, though no detail on what those might involve has been given.
Because Big Head mode is confined to casual defusal play, it carries no competitive implications for ranked or esports formats. Dust2.us framed it as a nod to Counter-Strike's casual player base, a group the outlet said rarely features in esports-focused discussion of CS2.
The update's other notable discovery came from dataminers, including Gabe Follower, who found that Valve have given the weapon previously known as the M14 a new model and renamed it the LAR. Leakers cited by Dust2.us describe the LAR as a single-shot rifle in the mould of the Winchester.
The claim that the LAR could become Counter-Strike 2's first entirely new weapon remains unconfirmed, Dust2.us said. The weapon's files are currently stored in a folder labelled "do_not_ship", indicating it is not close to release and may never make it into the live game at all.
For competitive players, the practical takeaways from the update are the silent reload toggle and the AMD rendering fix, both of which affect live gameplay now. The Big Head mode and the LAR remain curiosities for the time being, one a casual-only cosmetic twist and the other an unreleased weapon sitting in Valve's internal files.
