FIFAe Finals postponed hours before Jeddah tournament was due to open

FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation pulled the 2026 FIFAe Finals one day before its Jeddah opening, leaving national squads and partners without a new date or venue.

FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation called off the 2026 FIFAe Finals on 15 October, a single day before competition was due to begin in Jeddah, Esports Insider reported. No replacement date or venue has been announced.

The tournament had been scheduled to run from 16 to 25 October at the Abadi Al Johar Arena, featuring console eFootball, mobile eFootball and Rocket League. FIFA's 1 September announcement put the field at 12 national teams in each eFootball discipline and 16 in Rocket League, drawn from more than 120 entrants who had qualified through five continental championships.

The joint statement announcing the postponement pointed to an assessment of regional developments and their impact on the logistics needed to stage the event. It did not reference security.

That framing sits awkwardly alongside the withdrawals that preceded it. Japan's football association pulled its team on 10 October after assessing safety and security conditions in the host country, according to Esports Insider. Brazil's football confederation followed, cancelling its eSeleção entry over regional tensions and risks to the airspace and airports its delegation would have used.

Neither withdrawal statement was framed around logistics, which leaves a gap between the reasons teams gave for pulling out and the explanation FIFA and the Saudi federation offered for postponing the whole event.

FIFA's September announcement did not specify a prize pool for 2026. The 2025 edition carried a $450,000 prize pool, per FIFA's own figures cited by Esports Insider.

The postponement is the latest in a run of changes to Saudi Arabia's esports calendar. The 2026 Esports World Cup relocated from Riyadh to Paris in May, and the inaugural Esports Nations Cup was pushed from November 2026 to November 2027 after most of its qualifying rounds had already taken place. Organisers maintained that Saudi Arabia remained capable of hosting events.

FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation set out the current hosting and publisher arrangement in a July 2025 announcement, covering the 2025 and 2026 editions of the Finals. How that arrangement would apply if the tournament slips beyond 2026 has not been addressed.

Several practical questions remain unresolved: whether the Finals stay in Jeddah or move elsewhere in Saudi Arabia, whether existing qualification results will carry over, how travel and venue costs already incurred will be handled, and whether Japan and Brazil could still take part if the event is rescheduled.

FIFA said further announcements would follow in due course. For now, no champions will be crowned in console eFootball, mobile eFootball or Rocket League this October, and the next update from FIFA is expected to set out replacement arrangements.
