Dragon Ranger Gaming opened their VCT Threshold China campaign with a straight-game victory over Rare Atom, winning 2-0 in a best-of-three that got underway at 12:00 UK time, Esports Insider reported.

The result bucked the form book. Rare Atom entered the tie ranked 74th on Elo with a rating of 1622 and a 22-11 record across 33 rated matches, while Dragon Ranger Gaming sat 208th with a 1461 rating and a 49-54 record from 103 matches.

In the map veto, Rare Atom selected Summit and Dragon Ranger Gaming took Lotus, leaving Sunset as an unused decider. Dragon Ranger Gaming closed out Summit in 46 minutes before needing 48 minutes to finish Lotus and seal the sweep.

The tournament, running at THE HUB Performing Arts Center until 1 November, matters far beyond seeding. Dragon Ranger Gaming previously held a guest slot in VCT China but were left off the list of partner teams for the 2027-2028 cycle, according to a report by Sheep Esports cited by Esports Insider.

VCT China is shrinking from ten partner franchises to eight for that cycle. Four organisations lost partner status altogether: FunPlus Phoenix, Nova Esports, Titan Esports Club and Wolves Esports.

The old Valorant Challengers China format has been replaced by Threshold, which now serves as the finale of the Nationals season. The 2027 China Kickoff will field eight partner teams alongside two visitor sides and two teams that come through an Open Qualifier.

Week 1 of Threshold brings together five existing VCT China teams and seven national teams in a single-elimination best-of-three bracket, running from 21 to 25 October, with the winner claiming a VCT China place for 2027. Week 2 follows from 27 October to 1 November, and Rare Atom are not eliminated yet, since Week 1 losers drop into a Week 2 playoff alongside one further national team.

Dragon Ranger Gaming arrived at the event on a difficult run, having lost 0-2 to Any Questions Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 3 2026. Before that defeat they had gone down 1-2 to both Trace Esports and TEC Esports during VCT China Stage 2 2026, though that same stage also produced 2-1 wins over Wolves Esports and JD Gaming.

Thursday's result also repeated history: Dragon Ranger Gaming beat Rare Atom 3-0 the last time the two sides met, at VCT Ascension China 2025 on 19 October 2025. Rare Atom, for their part, had come into the Shanghai event off a 0-2 loss to JD Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 1 2026.

Dragon Ranger Gaming celebrated the win on social media, posting: "We find ourselves victorious to begin our journey back to VCT CN 2027 with a 2-0 victory vs @rare_atom #FearTheDragon #DRGWIN".

Every other opening-round tie on the day also finished in a sweep. Unsettled Resentment beat Octagonal Disposition Gaming 2-0, Any Questions Gaming defeated World Sports Invictus Gaming 2-0, and Wolves Esports, themselves stripped of partner status for next cycle, beat A Team 2-0.

Dragon Ranger Gaming's next assignment is FunPlus Phoenix on Friday 23 October, with the Week 1 semi-finals set for 24 October and the Week 1 final following on 25 October.
